Subaru Crosstrek debuted a new hybrid system

Until now, Subaru had only one hybrid system, the e-Boxer, which was merely a 'mild' addition to a conventional powertrain. It consists of a naturally aspirated 2.0 engine and a chain-driven CVT with an integrated auxiliary electric motor producing 14-17 hp. But now the Japanese company has introduced a more advanced hybrid system called S:HEV (Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle), and the first vehicle to feature it is the Subaru Crosstrek crossover.
The S:HEV powertrain includes a modified naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer engine (160 hp, 209 Nm), operating in an efficient cycle, and two electric motors. The first motor functions solely as a generator, while the second is a powerful drive motor with an output of 120 hp and 270 Nm. This motor primarily drives the wheels, while the internal combustion engine (ICE) can engage through a clutch and a single-stage reducer, but only at relatively high speeds. There is no traditional transmission; the hybrid system can operate in both series and parallel modes.
Subaru's traditional mechanical all-wheel-drive system is retained: there’s a transfer case and a center clutch, with a driveshaft going to the rear axle. However, with the ICE turned off, the Crosstrek won’t travel far, as the traction battery installed under the trunk floor has a capacity of only 1.1 kWh. Nevertheless, according to the manufacturer, the new hybrid consumes 20% less fuel than its predecessor. With an enlarged fuel tank (63 liters compared to 48 liters in the e-Boxer version), the promised driving range on a single tank exceeds 1,000 km. A nice bonus of the electric add-on is the appearance of a 1,500-watt household outlet in the trunk.
In its base configuration, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid comes with a two-tone interior featuring a combination of materials, a leather steering wheel, analog gauges, and 18-inch wheels. The second version, EX, comes with virtual instruments (12.3 inches), navigation, and Subaru’s signature EyeSight system with an expanded set of electronic driver aids.
Subaru has already begun taking orders for the Crosstrek Hybrid in Japan, although prices have not yet been announced. However, all those who place a pre-order will receive a branded portable refrigerator. In the spring of next year, the new hybrid powertrain will also be installed in the Subaru Forester crossovers.
