Meet the new SUV from Haval, built on a pickup truck base

The second-generation Haval H5, first announced for Russia a year ago, has finally reached us. And it is gigantic! This is the largest passenger car of the brand: from nose to tail it is almost 5.2 meters with a wheelbase of 3140 millimeters. That is, the new product is more than half a meter longer than its predecessor! So, a large frame SUV with a plug-in all-wheel drive, which is offered with both a gasoline engine and a diesel engine. Sounds interesting? Let's figure out what this car is like in action.
By and large, the new Haval H5 is a passenger version of the Poer King Kong pickup truck, which is even larger in size. The SUV inherited its frame structure, line of power units, design of the front part of the body, including X-shaped stampings on the sides, as well as almost the entire interior.
In addition, the new Haval H5 has a similar ground clearance (200 millimeters), approach and departure angles (25 and 22 degrees, respectively) and a similar ford depth of 600 millimeters for an SUV and 500 millimeters for a pickup.
The all-wheel drive transmission system is also no different: it is rigidly connected, with a low gear, a BorgWarner transfer case and a mechanical rear differential lock, which is activated automatically. At the same time, there are no electronic programs for selecting driving modes - either off-road or on asphalt. Everything is as simple as possible.
The only noticeable difference is in the suspension. If the front is still the same independent spring structure with double wishbones, then at the rear, instead of springs, there is a solid axle with levers, springs, telescopic shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar.
As for the engines, there are two two-liter units to choose from - gasoline and diesel. The first produces 200 horsepower (380 Nm available from 1800 rpm), and the second - 150 horsepower (400 Nm available from 1400 rpm). Unlike the pickup, the SUV does not have a manual transmission. Both versions have the same transmission - an eight-speed ZF automatic, capable of "digesting" up to 500 Nm.
The second main difference from the Poer King Kong is that the diesel engine on the SUV is equipped with Ad Blue synthetic urea injection, which improves environmental performance. It will have to be topped up at certain intervals (depending on operating conditions and driving style) through a separate filler neck located under one cap next to the fuel. To operate the system in cold weather, a heating system is provided, which is activated automatically.
And this is perhaps the only difficulty that the owner may encounter. The rest of the new Haval H5 is quite simple - just look inside. The interior looks interesting due to the multi-textured inserts, but in fact it is made of very budget materials. The entire interior is finished with hard plastic, the steering wheel has no reach adjustment, the mirrors in the sun visors are not illuminated, the driver's seat does not have adjustable cushion angle and lumbar support, and the passenger seat, even in the top configuration, will not have electric drives.
The dashboard "disguises" itself as fully electronic, but consists of three separate screens with a single color 3.5-inch trip computer display. It is surprising that such a large (and expensive) car has single-zone climate control, but the heating of all seats, windshield, steering wheel and washer nozzles is a big plus.
The multimedia system with a 12.3-inch screen looks nice, works quickly and pleases with the presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto protocols, but, truth be told, it does not shine with the number of various fine-tuning. I would also like to separately praise the interior designers for not transferring the inclusion of seat heating to the interface of the complex - mechanical keys will always be more convenient.
The space in the second row is simply royal, which is not surprising for a car with such a wheelbase. The third row is not provided for the model even on the Chinese market, so the seats here are not adjusted in the longitudinal direction, but the backs can be slightly folded back. With all the gigantic supply of free space for people of any height, the lack of a central armrest is very disappointing. And it would also be nice to add another USB port.
